Solar capability

Home > Energy and telecomunications

Sector: Energy and telecomunications

Actividad: Earth observation

Disciplinas: Maps, Remote Sensing and Artificial intelligence

Solar energy does not emit greenhouse gases, meaning it is one of the most efficient renewable technologies in the fight against climate change.

There is no map available of a city or territory that describes the solar potential of its constructions and roofing with a view to users being able to see the effectiveness and possible economic perks of using this energy source.

Main features of the service

COTESA has developed an algorithm that enables the integration of physical and radioactive parameters with the aim of determining the most suitable roofing surfaces for the installation of solar panels.

In-house algorithm through the use of open-source technology

Physical parameters are integrated (area, positioning and roofing slope) along with radiative parameters (percentage of sunlight hours, standard incident radiation and solar capability)

The information represented corresponds to an annual accumulated amount

The product obtained is a map displaying solar capability in raster format

Benefits

  • Free input data.
  • It can be used in any part of the world.
  • The information can be represented at any time of the year
  • Accurate identification of the most suitable roofing surfaces for the installation of solar panels.

    Success story

    MADRID CITY COUNCIL

The Madrid City Council has implemented this service on an annual basis from 2020 running until 2023.

    RENERMAP

Ground-breaking project in the generation of an automatic algorithm to classify areas according to their solar potential with a view to subsequently installing solar panels.

    Technological elements used

    • Satellite imaging.
    • Advanced remote sensing
    • Artificial intelligence

Thanks to this algorithm any body, company or citizen can accurately  appraise the suitability of a building and construction beforehand with a view to installing solar panels.
